But my foray into hermeneutics was to demonstrate how legitimate the confusion was. And Lowen ain't got no call to sass his mother if the evidence as provided suggested that

Lowen had a little dog
Its fleece was white as snow.
And everywhere that Lowen went
The dog was sure to go.

Vincent, you beat me on the opening remarks (you must have sat at the feet of McDougall), but I return to Exhibit A: the evidence of the picture.

Now Lawyer Kiko has already pointed out that the presence of a picture on a blog entry does not necessitate the existence of that picture in real life, but I want to point out a crucial difference between the bizarre photos that decorate the Fingerpost and the seemingly innocuous image of the adorable little dog: I appeal, ladies and gentlemen, to epistemological possibility!

There are two kinds of possibilities in this world, those that can be thought of (metaphysical possibility), and those that are consistent with what we encounter in our daily world (epistemological possibility).

The thumb with face portrait falls quite neatly into the first category, but seldom into the second. Hence any confusion regarding its carryover into the real life of the Howard world is minimal.

The dog with shoes picture, however, is a different story: not only is it quite conceivably possible for a dog to sit on top of shoes, but such things happen every day in the real world (or so I am told, you must interview the dog owners in this universe for more definitive answers).

The high degree of epistemological possibility attendant in this damning piece of evidence (I refer, ladies and gentlemen, to Exhibit A) contributes to an extraordinary level of confusion that, absent clear labeling to the contrary, renders a straight-forward interpretation of the text very difficult. If Lowen had wished to avoid the confusion his illustration would provoke in the minds of his readers, he ought to have labeled the picture "not from my real life" and been done with it.

Ladies and Gentlemen of the Jury, I rest my case.

(PS Mostly, you can just tell I am stressed and so extraordinarily thankful for the opportunity to think about other things for three minutes. Thank you fellow argumentaters. Have a beer and pretend I am there with you. Cheers.)Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5269587361169540740.post-21147328187734236852007-03-08T07:20:00.000-05:002007-03-08T07:20:00.000-05:00what, are we starved for conversation around here ...what, are we starved for conversation around here or what?
i say we head over to lowen's blog (which is lean on entries and comments) and resume this heated discussion.Damienhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15470939561256465212noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5269587361169540740.post-67570664106169034802007-03-08T06:15:00.000-05:002007-03-08T06:15:00.000-05:00whoa.anyway, kate, i love you, keep blogging!(when...whoa.

anyway, kate, i love you, keep blogging!(whenever you feel lke it!)we will read!!

xoxoxoxgrey rose (they/them)https://www.blogger.com/profile/14276803823247907626noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5269587361169540740.post-60199330377011895782007-03-07T23:38:00.000-05:002007-03-07T23:38:00.000-05:00P.S. We know that the members of his house had the windows open (this stated explicitly before he begins the description of his dream), so when he relates that he woke up and saw the dog with one of his shoes in its mouth, we can conclude one of two things: 1) either the reader interprets this passage as being still under the dream sequence narration and the second awakening was thus within the dream and therefore not real or else 2) we can conclude based on prior facts (the windows being open) and the absence of any "this is a dream" language immediately prior to the description of his second awakening to mean that he had morphed back into reality. The question is open to debate and might puzzle scholars for many years to come.

Hermeneutics can be tricky. Maybe we should form different schools, (the New Perspectives on Lowen), just to debate this more precisely...Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5269587361169540740.post-9694056163951277312007-03-07T21:02:00.000-05:002007-03-07T21:02:00.000-05:00I have to defend Lowen here.
