At a stand-still

Why aren't I blogging? Damien reminds me, Marianna coaxes me....I could blog about my brother-in-law's graduation from a 2 month long rehab and how he honored his sons by what he said in front of everyone that evening...I could blog about my big sister, first born of 9 of us who after 30+ years in Scarsdale, N.Y. moved with her husband to Annapolis, Md. to be with our healthy 85 year old mother, our sister Dawn and of course her daughter and grandchildren. Dawn and I are very excited about this. Sentences are just not coming. I don't know why because there is so much going on that is newsworthy. Brae moved to Philly, Kyrie is in Peru, Lowen has a little dog....I will try again soon.

Kate, thanks for posting. It's fun just to hear what's going on in your life -- nearly halfway around the world.

LOWEN HAS A DOG?!?!?!

Lowen said...

Lowen does not have a little dog.

Mom, I always feel like you're misrepresenting me on this blog. Check your facts!

Kate, I loved your post today. And Lowen, I too thought you had a dog from your blog. Perhaps you are misrepresenting yourself?! Did the little fella find his way out of your shoes and back home again, wherever that may have been?

Lowen said...

it was a dream.

Anonymous said...

But lowen, how did you take a picture of your dream? Now *that* is talent.

PS I find it harder to blog when there are newsworthy things happening because to me, the more important an event, the harder to reduce it to words.

Dear feetofclay and funke, I love you two. I was feeling down and irritated as usual at Lowen's comment-heaven forbid i shouold misrepresent him as to whether or not he has a dog... and along comes F and F to my rescue--thank you. I know why I have been down and what to blog about for 3/7

I thought he had a dog as well. heh.

I have to defend Lowen here. If you read his blog post entirely, you would know that he does not have a dog. The picture of the dog may have confused this a bit. But hey, when I see an image of a thumb with a face on it on Uncle Damien's blog, I don't assume that Uncle Damien has a face on his thumb. I know that he just found an image to illustrate his entry.

I think that Lowen is always entitled to correct the facts, especially when they pertain to his life.

I still claim that Lowen's post is very ambiguous. We know that the members of his house had the windows open (this stated explicitly before he begins the description of his dream), so when he relates that he woke up and saw the dog with one of his shoes in its mouth, we can conclude one of two things: 1) either the reader interprets this passage as being still under the dream sequence narration and the second awakening was thus within the dream and therefore not real or else 2) we can conclude based on prior facts (the windows being open) and the absence of any "this is a dream" language immediately prior to the description of his second awakening to mean that he had morphed back into reality. The question is open to debate and might puzzle scholars for many years to come.

Hermeneutics can be tricky. Maybe we should form different schools, (the New Perspectives on Lowen), just to debate this more precisely...

Sarah,

you must have missed the give-away hint in parenthesis; it appeared thusly: "(in my dream)."

another give-away hint was the word, "again," which makes an unmistakable reference to the prior awakening within a dream, an awakening Lowen, through implication, informs the reader is not an activity set in the conscious world.

P.S. My intention was not to start a debate on hermeneutics.

My point was, again: I think that Lowen is always entitled to correct the facts, especially when they pertain to his life.

what, are we starved for conversation around here or what?
i say we head over to lowen's blog (which is lean on entries and comments) and resume this heated discussion.

Kiko: Lowen is entitled to correct the facts, especially since the jury seems to find him guilty of possession. But my foray into hermeneutics was to demonstrate how legitimate the confusion was. And Lowen ain't got no call to sass his mother if the evidence as provided suggested that

Lowen had a little dog
Its fleece was white as snow.
And everywhere that Lowen went
The dog was sure to go.

Vincent, you beat me on the opening remarks (you must have sat at the feet of McDougall), but I return to Exhibit A: the evidence of the picture.

Now Lawyer Kiko has already pointed out that the presence of a picture on a blog entry does not necessitate the existence of that picture in real life, but I want to point out a crucial difference between the bizarre photos that decorate the Fingerpost and the seemingly innocuous image of the adorable little dog: I appeal, ladies and gentlemen, to epistemological possibility!

There are two kinds of possibilities in this world, those that can be thought of (metaphysical possibility), and those that are consistent with what we encounter in our daily world (epistemological possibility).

The thumb with face portrait falls quite neatly into the first category, but seldom into the second. Hence any confusion regarding its carryover into the real life of the Howard world is minimal.

The dog with shoes picture, however, is a different story: not only is it quite conceivably possible for a dog to sit on top of shoes, but such things happen every day in the real world (or so I am told, you must interview the dog owners in this universe for more definitive answers).

The high degree of epistemological possibility attendant in this damning piece of evidence (I refer, ladies and gentlemen, to Exhibit A) contributes to an extraordinary level of confusion that, absent clear labeling to the contrary, renders a straight-forward interpretation of the text very difficult. If Lowen had wished to avoid the confusion his illustration would provoke in the minds of his readers, he ought to have labeled the picture "not from my real life" and been done with it.

Ladies and Gentlemen of the Jury, I rest my case.

(PS Mostly, you can just tell I am stressed and so extraordinarily thankful for the opportunity to think about other things for three minutes. Thank you fellow argumentaters. Have a beer and pretend I am there with you. Cheers.)

okay. sarah gets the prize for Longest Comment Ever To Appear On An Informal Blog. who could ever have predicted that such discussions would be launched by kate howard? and who is feetofclay?

ukrainiac said...

I'm with Hannah -- Kate, you write and we will read...

kate said...

What exactly are you saying Damien? Oh, he is here in the next room...

Longest Comment Ever to Appear on an Informal Blog is a prize with a title worthy of the length which inspired it. However, the award does not merit as much prestige as Longest Series on Calling Ever to Appear in a College Newspaper Called the Bagpipe, a prize which, I am afraid, really has to go to Vincent.

Lowen said...

Mom, I can't believe you've generated 20 comments on your blog (...21 counting this). That's an achievement!

kate said...

All that and I finally get a good, positive word from Lowen... what a great outcome ... must have been some caffeine in that cup of coffee Funke had this morning!! Thanks for the fun this was.

I am so glad I thought to go back to see if Lowen would indeed defend himself regarding that adorable little puppy who in fact may not have been adorable at all since the one in the photo is an imposter. You all have the gift of gab, and I am laughing.

dear pieceofcake,
I am really quite sinseriously happy drafting on the blogs of others. : ) My world is a happier place thanks to the literary genius spilling onto these pages. I am oh so content to just peek in for now. Kate, thanks ever so much for spurring on these amazing contemplations.

Feetofclay,

I got your message on my blog. Yes, I am Andy and Debbie's niece. I would like to claim that I am their favorite niece, but they have a lot of them (my dad and Uncle Andy have three other brothers, who happened to be blessed with a significant amount of daughters). So fun to "meet" more people who know my relations.

It would make me feel better about life in general if this thread were rounded up to 30 comments even....

Does anyone else appreciate the irony in the title of this blog? And Funke, glad to meet you and I'm sure in some way you are their favorite niece.

Good day, sun shines!
There have been times of troubles when I didn't know about opportunities of getting high yields on investments. I was a dump and downright pessimistic person.
I have never thought that there weren't any need in large starting capital.
Now, I feel good, I started to get real money.
It's all about how to choose a proper companion who uses your funds in a right way - that is incorporate it in real deals, and shares the profit with me.
