Half Nelson

Damien and I just watched Half Nelson. I think Matt recommended it. A pretty miserable movie, dontchathink? Everyone's life was a mess and getting worse. If any of you saw it, what did you think of it? The main guy reminded me a little of Lowen but ONLY in looks--handsome and cool and he also reminded me of Uncle Dave in his charm.

You shouldn't watch movies recommended by philosophy types. :)

Some of the most depressing films I've seen were recommended by Lowen...and my family has gotten into the habit of being skeptical regarding my own movie recommendations...

No but Matt is a history guy and pretty positive and upbeat and so I thought "o.k, we'll watch it". The ending just leaves you hanging-it doesn't wrap up anything-like you have to make your own ending--great hearing from you.

Judging by the title, is it a wrestling movie? For you non-wrestling types, a half nelson is a pretty well known wrestling move. We watched "Facing the Giants" this week and this low-budget fim made my sappy self cry about a half dozen times. Christin watched The Prestige for the first time and said she had it figured out. Not me.

Half Nelson is a teacher movie.

And I am having a little trouble envisioning Ryan Gosling as Lowen. Maybe it's the Notebook that keeps crowding out the comparisons. I always thought early Thom Yorke looked a little more Lowenesque.

And Lowen you are the most depressing person I know. Talking to you is like playing morning bell on endless repeat.

actually I take that all back. you are just intense, whatever emotion you project. this from someone who occasionally needs passers-by to check her pulse, to make sure she is still alive.

this movie is a bummer. the critics absolutely love it. i don't see the main character's "gift" as communicator in his teaching role or in any of his interpersonal relationships. often he sits dumfounded when he needs to speak up. the movie goes from grey to grey except when it's taking the obligatory jabs at our sinister government and shameful history.
oh and sarah, gosling didn't remind me of lowen in any sense. in looks he reminded me of david arquette.

Man Funke, some harsh words for lo-lo. Lo, positive and upbeat? What comes to mind is thoughtful(cerebrally speaking),intense and very energetic about whatever you are interested in. Positive and upbeat-not at this time but hopefully it is forth coming xo

If you want to see another depressing movie watch 'Jules et Jim', by Francois Truffaut. We just saw it today...all intellectual words aside, it sucked. It's about a love triangle, where the selfish person wins in the end.

My medicine for watching this flick is this: I love my husband, my husband loves me, and we love our God.

Oh, I didn't mean to be harsh!

Lowen, I love you even if you are depressing.

In other words, keep the intensity. it rubs off on the people around you. and they love you for it.
